What is the Physician Health Program (PHP)?

PHP is an Arizona Medical Board sponsored program, operated by an outside contracted medical group to perform assessments and post-treatment monitoring of allopathic physicians and physician assistants who may suffer from substance abuse, substance dependency, medical, psychiatric, psychological or behavioral health disorders that may affect their ability to safely practice medicine or perform healthcare tasks.

MAP Mission Statement

PHP ensures the protection of the public and safely through education, intervention, post-treatment monitoring and support for allopathic physicians and physician assistants who may suffer from health related issues. This program is authorized by A.R.S. 32-1452 and A.R.S. 32-1452.01.

Program Confidentiality

An allopathic physician’s and physician assistant’s participation in PHP may be confidential if there are no related criminal charges, patient care issues, or statutory violations.

Allopathic physicians and physician assistants who have criminal charges or related statutory violations or were former PHP participants for chemical dependency who have relapsed are not eligible for confidential participation and participate in PHP under a probationary order.

Safeguarding the public

Protection of public safety is of paramount importance. Any allopathic physician or physician assistant who is determined to be unsafe to practice will be removed from practice though a Board order or voluntary inactivation until such time as they are again determined to be able to safely practice medicine or perform healthcare related tasks.
